5 Apps For The New Year
In the era of smartphones, there are thousands of apps out there. How do we know which ones to use? We test them!
If you are looking to make more money, lose weight, discover new music, or read more, you’re in the right place! Check out the following apps:
Shopkick & Ibotta
While these are two separate apps, they are relatively the same in concept. These apps are perfect for the avid shopper.
Shopkick tabs on the homepage will direct you to local deals and products. To start, you’ll want to turn on your Bluetooth setting. When you walk into a participating store and open the app, it will grant you points just for entering the store! Once in the store, choose the store’s name on your home page. Then, click the “scans” button and a list of products will show up. By clicking the product and scanning the barcode in the store through the app, you will earn points (or “kicks) toward gift cards to almost any store you can think of!
Ibotta can also earn you points toward gift cards, but you earn your points a bit differently. After downloading the app, you can see participating stores nearby. You have to choose the store you plan to visit and it will list multiple products. It will then provide how much cash back you’ll receive if you purchase said product. If you choose to buy any of the products listed, just make sure you keep your receipt! Once you’ve completed the purchase, upload the receipt by clicking the “Verify Purchases”. You’ll see this button on the bottom of your screen. Once you’ve racked up $20 in rebates, you can start collecting via PayPal or Venmo! You can also redeem gift cards to a variety of stores and restaurants.
OfferUp is an amazing app that allows you to easily and safely sell your unwanted items. All you have to do is take a photo of the item, list the details and price and post it! Your product will show up on the home pages of people in your area. If someone is interested, they’ll message you with an offered price. If you choose to accept, pick a public place to meet them and make the transaction.
OfferUp offers a verification called “TruYou Member”, where they’ll conduct a free background check on people who request it. I always make sure anyone I’m selling or buying from has this verification. The verification appears as a badge on their profile under the photo. There’s also a star rating option so you can see if this person has been well liked by other users. You can sell almost anything on there, so clean out those closets!
I think this might be one of my all-time favorite apps! I’m a very frugal person and understand how expensive nice gyms can be, so I started working out in the comfort of my own home. Sworkit will provide you with tons of exercise you can do anywhere. The best part is you can do so without equipment! Choose the duration of your workout and the area of your body you want to work on. If you find certain exercises you love, you have the option to create your own workout regimens. No more excuses!
Spotify is every music lover’s dream and has everything you could want…and more! If you haven’t jumped on the Spotify train, you need to. There is a free option (with commercials) or Spotify Premium (commercial free) paid option for $10 per month. If you do sign up for Premium, you’ll get 3 months for only $0.99.
On this app, you can create your own playlists and choose from millions of songs and artists. Spotify also has pre-made playlists sorted by genre. If you sign up using your Facebook account, you can create public playlists to share with your friends and vice versa. Another cool feature is the “Discover Weekly” playlist. Once you’ve used the app for at least a week, Spotify will create a playlist for you every Monday and base it off of what you listened to the previous week. It will generate songs by similar artists you like. Often times you’ll find new music to love!
You can even listen to Spotify while using other apps on your phone or tablet. Try pairing Sworkit with Spotify and be sure to check out other fitness tracks here.
This app is great for a person who loves to read or someone who is looking to read more! On this app, you can read thousands of books written by amateur writers. You can search by genre and find stories varying in length. Read them straight from your phone and have the option to leave feedback for the writer.
If you are a writer yourself, you’ll definitely want to check this app out as you have the option to upload a story. I have a friend who is in the process of writing a novel and she uploads her process to the app and asks for feedback or editing tips from the public! It’s great tool to help generate a community/following.
